Comment on Growth Hormones and Their Use for Short Children

Some children are very short. They complain to their parents that they are picked on and that theyare being called shorty. Some parents ahve opted to inject their children with growth hormones to give their children some height. They think that they can buy their child abetter life wiht injections, according to a leading bioethicist.
These hormones can cause : headaches, scoliosis, and ahost of other health concerns. It appears to cost $50,000 approximately to gain one inch! Wow!
For 4 inches of growth, it takes $200,000 .
Is this a good idea for the children do you think? Is it ethical?

Growth hormone is indicated for children whose growth is clinically behind relative to their age. There are tables which will indicate how tall a child should ideally be at their age, and these include a wide margin. Certain medical conditions will cause growth retardation, and growth hormone is one of the treatments. It is by NO MEANS a cosmetic drug, and anyone who wants to have that treatment for their child for the reasons you outline in your piece need their heads examining. More constructively, they should take the kid to the doctor and let him decide if there really is a problem.

I think parents need to talk to their children before having anything like that done for really it is a choice that the child will have to live with. I know some adult males today that wish they had the option to use it for growth purposes when they were young since they are short today. I think as long as everyone knows the risks involved and is willing to do it, they I don't see why not...

Growth hormones? god no! these kids should learn to deal with it. i'm sorry to be harsh but they should, they're gonna be short their whole lives. they need to come to terms with it from a young age. and realise its the bullies not them with the problems. and also, its teaching kids that you need to be a certain way to be accepted and that changing yourself to suit others is ok. (shakes head) i totally disagree with it, never mind the risks.

Hey Natalie- It is amazing to me what people will buy into these days, just for a few years of happiness, if even it lasts that long. There's no research done that I know of that shows any lasting effects of these kinds of treatments, but that aside, I still think it's unethical to pray on children's insecurities, and not very good for parents who are (understandibly loving their children and not wanting them to be hurt) but for not showing their kids how special they are in many other ways. Some folks are short, some fat, some bald, some have big noses- we are all different, and the world would be boring if we all looked the same! I have spent most of my life being insecure about many of my physical features, but even if I was beautiful on the outside, doesn't mean anyone would care what I was on the inside.
