The Great Dolphin Defenders

The Great Dolphin Defenders

PBS

Imagine my delight when watching this PBS program and I find out that the Dolphin Defenders have not only helped save dolphin pods and Orcan whale pods who have gotten lost and who needed nutrition and someone to return them to the sea; but that they have also served to educate whole groups of fishermen about the need to preserve solphins and whales!:):)

I love dolphns and I am very impressed by their civilzed manner in trying to help humans who are lost or endangered and in trying to care for their own families!

The Dolphin Defenders are responsible for turning around a whole group of fishermen who were determined to fish for dolphins in Japan!Trough PBS you can order the video or try to see the Dolphin Defenders when they come on again. Well worth it to me.

What do you think of them? Please let us know.

Also, Jland is curious... what are your favorite animals?

A Great Source for Autistic Summer camps and Teacher Training

A good friend and wonderful Jlander writer Jeanette wrote to me reccomending PyramidEducationalConsultants as a great group that offers wonderful workshops and summer camps for autistic children in America. This group also assists schools, teachers and parents who might need help in improving their communication skills and their education of autistic children. Jeanette's partner's sister lives in Europe and yet she travelled to America to partake in these summer camps.

"Inside the Autistic Mind"

by Claudia Wallis

Autistic Children are Extremely Advanced

New technology is helping us diagnose how the brain of an autistic child works and how it compares to our brain and guess what? The part of the brain, the hippocamus, connected with memory is 10% larger than ours.Wallis tells us about a gifted teen who could not communicate very well at first; but now, with a tutor and a specialized computer keyboard she can communicate and solve difficult problems well.

Troubling is the fact that their frontal lobes, connected to higher reasoning, are inflammed.Scientists have yet to find the cause for this. Research is ongoing.

Researchers have discovered that head banging or repeating phrases, says Wallis, are just coping mechanisms, not hard wired.A remarkable researcher, Wallis has concluded that the autistic are not cold and that they do have the abilitiy to feel love and other deep emotions; it's just their lack of ability to communicate before this new found technology that has been the fault.Wow! I knew this but now there is proof!

Wallis points out that people have often listened only to the most highly functioning autistic people. She says that Chadima Rajapatirana, an autisitc writer from Indiana, explains that her body experiences a lack of knwoing if she is sitting or standing. Sometimes,Rajapatrirana says, it takes someone's hand on her leg for her to know where she is.

This research is great and it show us how talented autistic people can be!

Please give us your thoughts about autism. You could include  your feelings about autistic people and any experiences with autism or with people you know who are autistic.

"Who Wins and Who Looses When Gas Prices Skyrocket?"

by Bill Saporito

The Airlines ,Chemical enterprises, and Fed Ex: Do They Need to be Subsidized by our Government?

Mr. Saporito wrote an interesting article on the whole problem that we are having with the price of gasoline escalating at such a high rate. Everyone knows about the fact that gas prices have gone up considerably and that this is diffiuclt for people who drive a lot.

Do you realise that Dow Chemical Inc.is using up 47% of its' total cost (budget) in energy and hydocrabon feedstocks, Mr. Spaporito tells us. How about this: Saporito discovered that for every one dollar increase in the price of a barrel of oil this translates to a $365 million for each of the eleven airlines? They are all going into the red; even the very efficient Jet Blue! Some of the airline companies were hoping to be breaking even this year. Now they are finding out, according to Mr. Cordle of Airline Forecasts, that they may stand to loose $3.5 billion in 2006. Cordle predicts mergers and higher fares, but will that be enough? How much of a price increase can the public carry?

Fed Ex had to go up from 12% to 13.5% . How much more can they pass along and make money?

Saporito says that even pizza delivery companies are getting worried.

He points out that the world price is being driven up beyond what we have experienced in the past due to huge demand from new industries in China and in India.

What do you think? Will we subsidise these companies in order to keep our economic health and growth as a modern society?Do you know another way to afford these increases?

"Getting a Leg up on Land"

Paleontologists sensed that the tetrapods were connected somehow to fish but they could not produce the evidence in fossil form until 2005.

Acanthostega lived 360 million years ago in Greenland. He had paddles for swimming adn he had legs, but they could not support his weight on dry land. he had ribs that were too short to keep the chest cavity from collapsing once it left the water.

My Two Travel Books for Scalzi's "Pick Two"; Ma Chun, Brown and Scalzi make the list ,

Google photos

My Two Travel Books

(John Scalzi made me do it!:)

The first book I choose is Ma Chun's "China's Water Crisis". He is listed in Time's comemorative magazine "One Hundred People". He is powerful in China , because like Rachel Carrson's"Silent Spring" he is the first speaker for the unavoidable bad effects of uncontrolled, unmonitored growth. He is an interesting writer. He says that people in China are now seeing that they too have a voice in the environment and that there are all of teh sudden legal options against contamination of the environment.

I picked up "Chill Factor" by Sandra Brown because there are no clues to the unsolved murder in North Carolina and I predict you'll love her style.

BTW:John Scalzi's books are great! I reccomend Old Man's War, Agent to the Stars and his newest Ghost Brigades. Excellent science fiction, very original, well crafted. Bea loves his work too!

Ok so please comment on these; or, alternatively, please list your favorites in comments or in a link to a blgo entry. Thanks!Have a great rest of Memorial weekend!

Memorial Day - Let's honor our fallen soldiers

Memorial Day - Let's Honor our Fallen Soldiers

We have lost about 4,620 soldiers in Iraq so far.

I don't know how many soldiers and service men and women died in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, Vietnam, The Korean War, World War I and World War II.

However I know that war is a terrible thing; people suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome and many people suffer heavy injuries. Some people die.

I used to go with our scout troop as they placed American flags on each grave to honor our soldiers who never came back.

I am thinking of these people now . I hold  high esteem for them today.

Please leave comforting comments for teh families of troops who have passed away.

Paul McCartney ; A great guy

Google pictures

Paul McCartney ; A Great Guy

I've heard though the news that Paul has been sad recently. I just want to say here how much so many of us love him . He was always caring about his band members. His music tells the story of fighting for love and compassion in this world.

We loved him when he was so happily married and we loved him when he carefully raised his family. We loved him when Linda got cancer and we cried for him and ourselves when she passed away.

We loved him when he found Heather and we loved him when they married and had a child.

We love him still and we wish he and Heather well.

Please write your comments here.

"The Ways of Opus Dei"

by Dan Van Biema

Van Biema points out in his article that Opus Dei was not at all as it is portrayed in the movie historically.

They were a kind Christian group who tried to help other people in the community.

Other theories in this book have been made up to entertain the movie goers.

All is cool in love and war... Yes, it is if you know when it is made up...:):)

Ok Yes, I do like Tom Hanks! Will you be going to see it? What do you think about it?

Nacho Bueno

I saw some previews for Nacho Bueno; a teen movie coming out this summer. It looks silly, fun loving and amorous so teens might like it!

The hero is a priest in training in Mexico I think.

He is good friend with some preists and a nun there.

This movie starts out with a very scary scene and builds more fright as it goes on...

the Super Sleuth (Cruise) and his team travel and engage in difficult adventures.

I liked it...
