Should we add Chinese script in Schools in the US?
At this moment there is a Chinese Cultural Institute
in New York; trying to expand its' base of Amercian schools that offer Chinese in addition to English and Spanish. Some progressive schools out West have started featuring Chinese.
We are huge business and trading partners with China.
Do you think that some schools should offer Chinese? Or all schools? Elementary or HighSchool?

I believe High Schools should teach as many languages as possible. In most countries in Europe, it's very common to speak many languages......including ours.

I know of schools in texas that already offer Chinese...my high school offered german, asl, french, and spanish. My college even offers more languages.

Absolutely. The 21st century will be the Asian century. They will be the economic and political powerhouse of the next 100 years. Better learn it now!

When I was in 6th grade, I remember thinking, when I asked which foreign language I wanted to take in high school, Spanish or French, I chose French (I thought only the real smart kids who were going to be doctors and lawyers one day would be taking Latin). I chose French because it was a family heritage thing (family name, Deslauriers). I also didn't think I'd ever need to speak Spanish, even though later I realized our neighboring country south is Spanish speaking. Well, our neighboring country north speaks French, at least some of them do. My point is, there were very few if any Spanish speaking families in the neighborhoods and schools back then (1960's). Today, as a teacher, I wishe I had learned Spanish because so many of our kids have Spanish speaking parents that we have to attempt to communicate with. China is fast becoming westernized in today's world... I do think in the very near future we will have to contend with them on serious issues regarding politics, economy, and world peace. Certainly wouldn't hurt to offer the language in some schools where populations show an interest, or where the culture of the Chinese may be growing, as in larger cities. We'll need people in all areas to speak and read and write using the Chinese language if we are ever going to truly understand their view of the world, their history, and their vision for the future, and how our culture affects their views and visions. They are a growing force in the world. Americans (in military, business, health, trade, government, transportation, science, education, etc) should be able to communicate with their professionals if we are to get along. Wouldn't hurt!!
