Protests Against Savage: People Unite

Monday, July 28, 2008
NBC

The reporter said that reporters and parents were out in force; protesting Michael Savage's unfriendly remarks against autistic kids and their families.
On the radio recently in the San Francisco area,
Savage called autistic kids" brats who get out of control because their parents don't discipline them."He implied that autistic kids do not have any developmental issues or problems completing tasks.
He said that they would be fine if parents would just step up and discipline them more.
The reporter said that the crowd was calling for Savage's resignation.
What do you think? Should Savage be charged or was it just a careless remark?
Should he get fired? Would it have affected you ro your friends badly if they had had an autistic kid?
Please let us know!
thanks, natalie

Nat, this guy Savage seems to be either ignorant of information and knowledge about autism, or he is purposefully saying these things to heighten the controversy. I don't know who listens to him, I don't. I've never heard of him til now, but after reading a news article about him (see link below), I don't think we can rely on what he said as being fact. "99% of cases are brats..." What? I can't believe someone with his medical history background would say such a thing... and knowing that he has over 8 million listeners over 350 radio stations... well, someone... lots of someones are being misinformed... criminally misinformed... about a topic that is important to the well-being of a large population of children and adults. I would easily stand in that protest crowd demanding his firing. I not only have a friend with an autistic boy (as well as two non-autistic children who are very well behaved and have done well in school), but I know several families with children through my job as a teacher. No, I don't believe that 99% of the cases are brats... I don't even believe there are 20% of the cases are brats... I trust our TEACCH professionals and others who test and work with these kids to not be over identifying these kids. Why would they do that? No, I've worked with them... they do have mental/emotional issues... we may not understand it entirely, but we learn more and more every year about them. This man is only trying to keep his airtime filled with controversy, and controversy increases listeners.  Check out the following link for more information:

I would say. "Come spend a month at my house. A few day's just wont do. You have to be around our son a lot to get the full scope of what I deal with everyday. We have had people come over and then we never see them again. Then we hear through the grape vine that they could not stand to be around our son. It is a sad and lonley life that we live when we are caring for our handicap children."
