The Multitasking Generation, PartI

The Multitasking Generation, Part I

Time

March27,2006

Anthropologist Elinor Ochs, director of  UCLA's Center on Evryday Lives of Families found a lot of multitasking was going on in the thirty two families that she studied. She is not sure that children can monitor all of thse things all of the time. This will have major consequences for the family she says.

Ochs' team found that when the other parent came home at night the children and the one parents were too busy with their tech devices to even notice that the other parent was home.

What do you think about this? Have you seen families around you struggle with this isssue ? Or do you find it a dead issue?

I think computers have a big place but TOO BIG in some families. I think there should be hours allowed for computer and tech privileges and a lot more family time spent. It's not good when kids don't even realize a parent came home. <sigh>

I can multi-task with the best of them, but I personally feel that children now and days have way too much on their plates to handle.  Between school with 5 hours of homework each night, after school sports, dance, music instructions, required attendance at school functions, etc., it is just getting too crazy.  Our children no longer get to be children anymore.  As soon as they hit 1st grade they are expected to do the work we weren't required to do until at least High School.  I know it's to try and keep our children up with the "rest of the world", but at what price?
Hugs and love,
Lisa

I think lots of famiies are too hectic and pressured. When my kids were little, there was no tv or video games or computer on school nights except fo r homework and we all sat down when we got home and talked.

I think the advent of TV was the demise of the family, people stopped talking to stare at a box in their homes. I haven't got a TV, can't stand the rubbish on them!! Seems like divorces became more frequent once TV had got a grip on families, could it be that's when people stopped communicating? Jeannette.
