Do You think Colleges Accept Lies From Students who try to get in?

Ms. Norman, A formidable college counselor , was interviewed by CBS about the college admissions process. It was revealing because she said that many kids cheat. In her opinions, more students should be honest and not cheat .

"I'd rather take a kid with lower scores who is honest," she said.

She continued:"If you get caught, why risk it? It's okay to have a weakness.. just address it head on ... I knew one student who ahd one bad grade. She explained why it had happened and treated it like an anomaly ..she went on to get a full scholarship!"

Norton is the Director of My College Counselor.

She said:Students are not honest enough. They have to be."

Please let us know how you feel about what Norton has said; and do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

thanks!

hugs, nat

You would be surprised how many people cheat sometimes.   However in college why it might help you out in the short run to cheat, in the long run you are only hurting yourself.  One day cheating will catch up to you and in college you often get expelled if caught cheating so I don't see the point.  To me if you don't know the material you either need to learn it better, drop that class, or get a tutor or something. Considering tutors are free at most college campuses, I think students often times are craving such good grades that they will go to any lengths to get them.

I honestly don't think most colleges are concerned too much by cheating anymore. College's are businesses now. They don't care as long as they are getting their money.

I think honesty is less valued than it used to be by some of the upcoming generations.  I wish it were not so, as character is important.  I hope parents and society will see dishonesty as a bad choice and make some corrections before it's too late for these young people.

I think a lot of the teens I am friends with feel that it's not wrong if you dont' get caught.
These are good kids, too, raised by loving parents. I don't know where that came from.

I agree totally that there should be zero tolerance for cheating.  When there are scandles like what we've had with companies like MCI and Enron- then we turn around and accept cheating from college or even younger grade kids?!  Makes no sense to me.  Honesty is the best policy, and if you can't go through college without cheating- well, I'd hate to see where half these kids who practice it will end up some day.  Thanks Nat- not a topic one would usually talk about much- but it does need to be brought up!  Carolyn :)
