Please comment on the book "Mommys Wars"

Google assembled these pictures

Montel, CBS

May 1, 2007

Montel hosted a writer, a mom and a law professor, Linda Hershman, who wrote a book about the disparity between working moms and stay at home moms. She said when she started the project she wanted to point out all of the bad things that stay at home moms do..when she interviewed them, things changed.

In the show Montel featured moms who had different points of view about a few things about mother hood.

Please leave us comment about these questions:

1. should children be spanked or not? when?

2. should moms breast feed or not? how long?

3.can moms have happy hour together with their babies? why or why not?

4. how do you feel about working ?

5. please leave your opinions and your links!:)

hugs,nat

In the 70's and 80's during the aftermath of the sexual revolution, feminists began to propagate the idea that they could have marriage, motherhood, self-fulfillment and careers without sacrificing any important part of the four.  Some women already knew it wasn't so but many fell for the propaganda.
By the 90's some smart women rebelled, realizing that having all of that meant not giving your best to some parts of it.  Often, motherhood sacrificed more than any other portion just because quantity time is necessary to be there for the important milestones that mothers love to see -- the first 'dada' and 'mama' spoken -- the first tooth --- the first time to sit up --- to stand -- taking the first step.  Some women recognized that they were being lied to and robbed of important moments.  They decided to stay home with their babies for awhile and not miss that chance.
I am not opposed to working out of the home.  I know some women do not have a choice in this.  But it's best to be realistic about the consequences.  We cannot have it all.  Something is sacrificed.

i do not think that momies should be at war. I have worked and stayed at home. When I stayed home I felt guilty about not bringing in any money. When I worked I felt guilty about not being at home with my children.

1. I did spank when the children were younger. You can't reason with a toddler who is sticking car keys in an out let. I little hand smack did not hurt them.

2. I breast fed one child until she sucked me dry. I bottle fed another one. The bottle fed one was a lot sicker then the breast fed one, but who can say if that is from not getting breast milk.

3. Happy hour? I do not know I tried even when I was working to spend more then an hour with my children.

4. Working. Some women to not have a choice.

I think some children benefit from spanking while others don't.  But as long as the parent looks at all their options and makes spanking a last resort punishment, then chances are they are doing what is best for their child.  I think breast milk is good for at least the first few years.  I prefer the breast pump idea personally only because life gets hectic and sometimes it would be easier for the dad to feed them.  Also I know dads that want that feeding time to bond with their children.   I am not so familiar with the concept of happy hour with kids...I think quality time is more important than anything else.  I think it is important for woman to work at least part time, for lots of reasons.  One being it gives them a break from housework and the like.  I think women deserve a break and that men should pick up some of the slack when a woman wants to work.  Also adults need adult friends and sometimes being surrounded by housework and kids all day means you give up your "adult role" in the world, and that is just not something I would want to do.  My mom had it all....a successful career where she ran with my dad a business, a good home life, a good social base with friends and family, and a great relationship with each of her kids.  My mom actually spent more time with us than many stay at home mom's that I knew did.  You can have it all, but it requires a lot of work, patience, and energy.  However I do think it is a little rude for women to be presumptuous about other's reasons for working or not working in the home.  As long as it works for them and their family then that is what is most important.

1.Yes, to spanking, but not in anger, only on the butt and for deliberate disobedience ie after warning etc.
2.Breast is best (that's what they were designed for!) but some Moms can't.I do feel uncomfortable watching Le Leche leaguers breastfeeding three year olds!(Six months to a year I reacon)
3.Happy hour? You mean when you both fall asleep exhausted :-) Yes, happy hour is GOOOOD (when you can GET one!!!)
4.I often complain that I don't think I should work, but when at home for holidays miss work! Think when kiddies younger that four, you should be primary caregiver!!!

  NAT,
           GLAD YOU ASKED,
MARY JANE, WHOM YOU HAVE READ ABOUT OR COULD IN MY JOURNAL ARCHIVES, THAT SAME MARY JANE WAS A REMARKABLE LADY.
SHE DID NOT SPANK, THOUGH KNEW IT WAS NECESSARY SO LEFT IT FOR ME.
SHE CERTAINLY DID BREAST FEED AS DID ALL MOTHERS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WITH BABIES. ONLY IN RECENT YEARS HAVE I KNOWN OF THE SICK MINDED ONES THAT ASSOCIATE BREAST FEEDING WITH ANYTHING ADVERSE TO GOD'S WILL. IN FACT, I DOUBT IF THE 'SICK ONES' KNOW GOD.
IT IS GREAT FOR MOTHERS TO GET TOGETHER AND HAVE 'HAPPY HOUR' WITH BABIES. OUR BABIES LOVED IT WHEN MARY JANE LAY ON HER BACK AND FEET HOLDING BABY UP IN THE AIR SWAYING TO AND FRO AND OTHER MOTHERS DOING LIKEWISE. NEVER ONCE WAS A BABY HURT. SOME OF THE FIRST WORDS WERE UP  UP  WHILE TUGGING AT MOTHER'S FEET.
WORKING MOTHER ? A DOWNTOWN JOB WOULD HAVE BEEN A PICNIC COMPARED TO THE WORK AT HOME, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH ONES ARRIVED.
IT COULD BE WELL TO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE CRITICS OF STAY AT HOME MOTHERS. DO THEY LEAVE THEIR OWN YOUNG ONES IN THE CARE OF OTHERS FOR HOURS AT A TIME ? THAT CERTAINLY IS PUTTING A LOT OF TRUST IN THE VARIOUS PEOPLE THAT COULD HAVE ACCESS TO THE CHILDREN.
IF A CHILD SHOWS ANY KIND OF FEAR WHEN BEING TAKEN TO THE BABYSITTER, IT IS WISE TO QUIT TAKING THE CHILD THERE. EVEN BETTER, ELIMINATE SOME FOOLISH OR UN-NECESSARY SPENDING AND TAKE CARE OF THE CHILD AT HOME .
READ ABOUT MARY JANE IN MY ARCHIVES.

1. I don't know if they should but I have lightly spanked my child once or twice but only after she continued to do something that I had asked then told her not to do because it could be harmful to her.
2. If the mom is comfortable yes they should it is the best nutrients for the child unless there are complications. They should do it for at least the first six months and no longer than when the child begins biting with teeth.
3. Happy hour like drinking no way but a happy hour spent with your baby is more than possible. Well no drinking with the baby because of obvious reasons. But spend an hour reading to your baby or watching a program your child enjoys with them and during that hour notice their enjoyment and it will be on happy hour, at least it is for me.
4. I have problems dealing with people I don't know and so as long as it is working from home where the only contact needed is through e-mail or the internet is fine with me. Aside from my problems I would hate to be away from my child if I had a job outside of the home. Since the day she was born she has been the biggest thing in my life.
5. Thank you for the chance to share my views on this subject.
