Aren't Seniors Worth It?

Aren't Seniors Worth It?

I read an article which infuriated me that other day... it said that now adays chemotherapy is not given to senior citizens because they are considered too old to reap the benefits!

Excuse me?!!! Who died and made you God?

Seniors deserve to be fredd from cancer jsua s young people do! What do you think?

I personally wouldn't want it at an old age...and many of my family members who were older couldn't handle it and it only made them worse.  I do think doctors need to be realistic in their giving advice on treatment options, and if they honestly think that in the long run chemo would only make dying worse, then it probably shouldn't be administered.

even at my age, I'd refuse it, definately refuse if I was older!!!But the choice must be given. I never heard of such a thing.

When my Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer they really didn't push her to get treatment. Perhaps if they had I might still have her here : (
It should be offered no matter what age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is sad and terrible
Seniors should have a choice but I wonder if
they could handle the chemo at such a fragile age
it might be too painful for them. I don't know ultimately
they should decide. Hugs, Marina

I understand their thinking on this issue. But I dont agree with it.
I think the United States does a terrible job of taking care of the elderly in this country. In other cultures, the elderly are held in high esteem.
We need to adopt that belief.
There is many things we can learn about the past, especially from people who actually lived it.

I agree...I understand their side of it completely. They are technically saying that they are too old to be saved or if you try to save them they cant survive the chemo. I DONT AGREE however. If it is their decision to risk it then go ahead, but let them know the negative parts of it. I mean, they might decide that they'll die of old age before the cancer gets them and they want to live out their days peaceful and NOT sick..ya know? Its up to the elderly...not us...Thats all I have to say.

The decision for any medical treatment should not be ruled out by anyone other than the patient unless there are extenuating circumstances involving risk with an older patient.

These days most doctors think they are God! It angers me beyond words. They need to slow their roll on some of these things.

My husband's grandmother is 99 years old this week. She had a skin cancer removed just before Thanksgiving. I know you are talking about the terminal kind. I suppose it depends on how long a person can be expected to live, considering all other health factors. If a person had a poor liver, poor heart, weak lungs, is bed-bound, can't see and can't hear, that person's quality of laugh is reduced considerably, and chemotherapy will only extend their suffering. In the end,  I think it should be up to the patient, if they can make that decision, the doctor, and the family who has to care for them. But, at what age do you draw the line? 65? 70? 75?... a healthy 80 year old and a fragile, weak, bedbound sick 60 year old are not going to have equal chances of survival. So would we deny the 80 year old? I haven't heard about this piece of news yet.
