The book called "the Boomerang Generation" said that many twenty somethings move back in with their parents after college. Why?

It was said that theri jobs don't pay enough for their living expenses and that loans are outrageously expensive nowadays. The reporter said that 34% of these young people get an allowance to help pay for rising costs of living when they decide to make it on their own.

Some parents said that itwas worth it to help their child get to live in a good, safe neighborhood and that their child gives them emotional support back. The parents who has kids living at home respected their boundaries.

What do you think? Do you agree? Would you do this if your kid needed help?

Please leave comments.

I'm doing it. My daughter and family live with me and I wouldn't have it any other way.

That seems to be the trend, but I am not moving home, mainly because I am away at school and will be till my late 20's thanks to grad school.  Many of my friends did though.  I think it is good and bad.  Good for the money savings part, but most people I knew that moved back in just ended up butting heads with their parents since their parents and themselves had gotten accustomed to different lifestyles and way of doing things.  But for the short run to help a college grad get on their feet, it isn't too bad of an idea.

I have a real problem with this. I believe that children owe their Parents the decency to get out. If you don't go to college then I believe you should leave after high school and get a job. Find your own place to live. I also think that if you go to college you need to get out when you graduate or turn 24 whichever comes first. It is totally improper for children to stay with their Parents when they are adults. I also think that parents should require their children live apart from them. Be an adult! Make it or don't make it on your own!! Interesting topic. It did get me a little riled up. Thanks. My Regards, Bill.

I think that many young folks (boy do I sound old when I say that!) find life at home a good way to live cheap while going and getting a job and (hopefully) saving their money.  They are able to get the cheapest room and board around, with free utilities, free meals and laundry service!  What kid wouldn't want to take advantage of that?  The problem is though, that these days, younger folks seem to think they should be able to have a 6 figure income in their early 20's, a 4b/2 1/2 bath home with all the luxury toys, and drive a fancy car by their early 30's.  They don't seem to think that it took their parents years to aquire things like the big home, nice furnishings, vacations etc. after moving up in a company- not expecting to start at the top.  Sure, things are more expensive these days, but even the lower salaries out there are a lot more than what my folks earned in their jobs.  A lot of people I know lived with their parents until the latest, 20/21, then got a cheap apartment, slept on a mattress on the floor and watched a 13 inch black and white tv.  Things sure have changed.  Have a good day Nat.  Carolyn

To be honest, its not uncommon. right now i'm living at home whilst studying. and even after, i know that it'll be a while before i can afford to rent in London. Can't even consider buying because its just too expensive. hopefully when Adam moves over here we'll pool our wages to rent, but wont buy until we move over there where house prices are much cheaper!!!
